Mike Leach’s Mississippi State debut has been moved up, according to a report by 247Sports.com.

MSU was originally scheduled to open Saturday, September 5; however, now, the Bulldogs will open Thursday, September 3, against New Mexico on a national broadcast.

The report states that this change had been in the works prior to the COVID-19 virus forced the shutdown of college spring sports. Obviously, everyone is hoping that the 2020 college football season is unaffected by the virus.

With this opener being moved into a national broadcast slot, the eyes will be on Mike Leach’s debut for the Bulldogs, including his potent air attack. It also ensures that MSU will have a couple extra days to prepare for a decent road test against NC State.

All SEC spring competition has effectively been canceled, but spring football is still up in the air right now.

“I’m not overly optimistic about the return of (spring) practice, we haven’t fully closed that opportunity, but practically that window is pretty narrow,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said last week.
