The Mississippi State receiving corps took a hit on Tuesday evening as a contributor from last year’s squad reportedly entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Per AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, JaVonta Payton has entered his name in the portal and will explore his transfer options:
Have learned that Mississippi State wide receiver Javonta Payton has entered the transfer portal. Had 19 catches last season.

Payton was a senior last year, but has 1 year of eligibility remaining. Again, when a player enters his name in the portal, it doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to leave a school, just that he’s exploring his options. We’ll see what Payton ultimately decides.
Payton had 19 catches for the Bulldogs last year, totaling 225 yards and a touchdown. He had a big season-opener in a win against LSU, catching 6 passes for 122 yards.
He spent 2 seasons at Mississippi State after starting his career at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
