The Saints turned some heads late in the 2020 NFL Draft when the team traded back into the selection process to take Mississippi State quarterback Tommy Stevens in the seventh round. Prior to the trade, the Saints had used up all their selections in the draft.

Why trade up for Stevens when the team already had Drew Brees and Taysom Hill on the roster? The Saints also added Jameis Winston to the roster this offseason.

Well, apparently the Carolina Panthers and first-year offensive coordinator Joe Brady had plans of using Stevens in a role similar to how the Saints have used Hill in the past and instead of allowing a division opponent that opportunity, the Saints moved back into the draft to land the former Bulldog.

The Saints recently updated the team’s official roster, and interestingly, Stevens isn’t listed as a quarterback — he’s listed as a tight end.

Here is the bio the Saints have provided for Stevens:

New Orleans traded back into the draft to pick up this 6-5, 235-pound signal-caller, who spent his graduate transfer season at Mississippi State. In 2019 for the Bulldogs, he threw for 1,115 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 381 yards and four scores. Prior to the 2019 season, the Indianapolis native spent four seasons at Penn State, where he contributed at multiple positions, a role which the Saints will try to develop him for in 2020.

With a loaded QB room, it makes sense that the Saints would give Stevens his first crack at making the roster at a position other than quarterback.

How well Stevens can grasp the tight end/H-back role in the offense could determine if he makes the roster or not but with Teddy Bridgewater off to Carolina, Hill is expected to assume the backup role in New Orleans, Stevens should have every opportunity to stick around in New Orleans.

After all, the team traded up in the draft to get him.
