While every road game in the SEC should be a challenge, this Mississippi State team had no business losing by three touchdowns last weekend in Lexington. That’s not to take away from the accomplishments of the Wildcats, who have now physically dominated the line of scrimmage in two league games to start the season, but Mississippi State is loaded with high-end SEC athletes and entered the season with championship aspirations.

Those hopes aren’t gone by any means but another performance like that one and the team will be one of the most disappointing teams in program history. To ensure that doesn’t happen, the players held their own players-only meeting this week following the disastrous road trip to Kentucky last weekend.

What was said during that meeting? Nick Fitzgerald didn’t get into exact specifics but noted that it needed to happen heading into this weekend’s home game against Florida.

“I think what we covered in there was necessary,” Fitzgerald said during his most recent media availability. “I think it was pretty obvious what we had to cover but it needed to be said, it needed to be brought up and brought to light and just put into the open so people can accept it and get over what they did and put those emotions they were playing with aside and just focus on football.”

According to the Hail State QB, whatever was said in that room needed to be put into the open and considering the magnitude of this upcoming game, the players in Starkville need to check their emotions in order to have success against their former coach and his new team this weekend.

This meeting could prove to be a turning point in the season for the Bulldogs if everything goes well on Saturday, and if it doesn’t, we’ll know this Mississippi State team received too much hype heading into the season and was crushed by the weight of the expectations placed on them.
