Perhaps looking to bolster the depth at quarterback following the transfer of redshirt sophomore Elijah Staley, Mississippi State added former East Mississippi Community College quarterback Wyatt Roberts to the practice field Sunday.

The news was first reported by former beat reporter Brandon Walker. After talking a physical on Saturday, Wyatt was cleared to compete in Starkville starting Sunday:

Roberts is of course best known for his role in the Netflix documentary series ‘Last Chance U’ that chronicled junior college football power East Mississippi Community College during the 2015 season. While Auburn’s incoming JUCO transfer John Franklin III received all the recruiting headlines last winter, it was Roberts that actually started at quarterback for EMCC over Franklin.

In fact, Franklin did not play significant minutes until Roberts went down to injury against Mississippi Delta in the last game of the season.

That game is best known for the bench-clearing brawl that erupted soon after EMCC head coach Buddy Stephens called timeouts to get the ball back before halftime, despite being up 48-0 in the second quarter. The brawl ended the game and EMCC’s season – thanks to the suspensions handed out in the aftermath of the brawl – as well as its chance to defend its JUCO national title.

Other SEC recent quarterbacks to play at EMCC include Ole Miss quarterbacks Chad Kelly and Bo Wallace.
