The idea of a rugby-style punt is to limit the return yardage, but Mississippi State may have just discovered the perfect way to combat that style.

Late in the first quarter of the Outback Bowl, Colten Rastetter went to punt for Iowa, and unleashed a punt that traveled just 12 yards to the Iowa 47 because it was cut off by Mississippi State’s Aaron Brule, who smothered it for no gain.

Mississippi State went on to tack on a field goal on its next possession.
