What Dan Mullen said after loss to Ole Miss in Egg Bowl
Here are comments from Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen after Saturday’s Egg Bowl loss to Ole Miss in Starkville, Miss.
Mullen here for postgame. Says turnovers and penalties were biggest issues. "They get 14 points from our turnovers, that's the difference."

"We dug ourselves too big a hole," Mullen says. Mentioned outscoring OM 27-17 after Rebels went up 21-0.

Mullen on O-Line: They were beating us. We had a bunch of injuries and had to move some guys around.
— Michael Bonner (@MikeBBonner) November 29, 2015
Dan Mullen: "They beat us. We had many injuries and had to shuffle guys around a lot of places but they won a lot of 1 on 1 matchups."
— Robby Donoho (@RobbyDonoho) November 29, 2015
Mullen: "Dak means a lot to me. What this senior class & Dak did for Mississippi State is special for a lifetime."
— Robby Donoho (@RobbyDonoho) November 29, 2015
Mullen: It's probably a once in a lifetime class in what this class has accomplished.
— Michael Bonner (@MikeBBonner) November 29, 2015
MSU didn't know that Rufus Warren wouldn't play until noon today. He had a kidney stone procedure earlier in the week.
— Michael Bonner (@MikeBBonner) November 29, 2015
Mullen asked about long-term future, says "I'm worried about the bowl game, this recruiting class and the next year."
— Bob Carskadon (@bobcarskadon) November 29, 2015
Mullen: We're focused on the bowl game right now.
— Michael Bonner (@MikeBBonner) November 29, 2015
Mullen: We finished better than y’all thought we would. All of you guys gave us zero chance before the season.
— Michael Bonner (@MikeBBonner) November 29, 2015
Don’t cry about offensive line issues. Stop recruiting “athletes over stars” and get big boys for the o line. We were without a top draft pick and beat one of the best d lines out there. And I think state finished exactly where everyone predicted they would in the SEC
We were predicted to finish last so no, we did much better.
I wouldn’t say much better. State finished second to last
Most of the media said State would be last in the west, and Auburn first.
More crying and whining from Cousin Eddie. No sleep this year either, huh?
What he meant to say: “I’m headed to Maryland”.
But seriously, I can’t stand Mullen. Yes he has made MSU more competitive but hasn’t really a beat anyone. Mullen should be giving at least half his pay check to Dak because without Dak, Mullen doesn’t get that raise and a lot of wins.
He developed Dak so that’s a pretty stupid thing to say. Look at his track record with QBs and tell me I’m wrong.
Dak has won 1 game vs a team that finished in the top 25. Mullen rode on Urban Meyers coat tails in terms of qb success with Chris Leake, Tebow and Alex Smith. Meyer recently won a championship with a 3rd string QB last year so I don’t think you can give all the credit to mullen. Yeah, Dak is good. But he is 0-2 against as a starter against what is it you guys say as an insult, TSUN?
And just like the last time he lost his OC, he’s having issues this season.
Not that I’ve ever said ‘tsun’ but you do realize that you actually typed ‘you guys’. Just sayin. Congrats on the win, they came hard out of the gate and gave us more than we could handle.
Losing to Florida when they had Grier is different than losing to Florida right. We all know this. Try again. And Memphis? No shame in losing to the #1 rated QB in college. Obviously we can handle lower tier QBs like Dak
What? You just replied to yourself about something that isn’t even mentioned here.
@BulldogBuck; I was replying to Hail St8 but SDS format would not let me reply under his comment. I took it from granted that you would have read a little futher.
“I was replying to Hail St8 but SDS format would not let me reply under his comment.”
There’s a reply button right under his comment.
“I took it from granted that you would have read a little futher.”
No, you ASSumed that someone would go out of their way to find the context of a comment you made that was out of place. His comments are spot-on —- Rebs always find a way to act as if the bad stuff never happened in their season and justify it somehow.
Meanwhile Mullen does what any coach does and says why his team lost, and you say he’s crying. I’m sorry, what’s he supposed to do — blow sunshine up the media’s ass? “We played great! Only lost by multiple touchdowns! Great job everyone!”
I’ve seen this new trend lately of calling coaches crybabies for providing post-game analysis of why their team lost. It’s ridiculous.
@Airebel
Lynch is actually 13th, though he should get a considerable bump after a recordsetting performance. Of the top 25 rated qbs going into this weekend (kelly and precott included), OM has faced 3 and beaten one. State has faced 4 and beaten 3. Consider numbers 2, 4, and 5 on that list play for Western KY, App St., and Bowling Green, and you might realize that you still lost to Memphis.
Dak would’ve been much better off going to LSU.
I think the feeling is mutual about Freezus. Congrats on beating Alabama and LSU. But losing to Florida? And Memphis? And Arkansas at home? Full credit to Rebel fans for their ability to accentuate the positive and ignore everything else. Again, deserved win tonight and good luck in your bowl game.
So, the teams we beat last season that beat you, that means you lost to nobodies. And, by your logic, Freeze should be splitting his salarie this year with Kelly.
You lost me at “last season.”
You brought it up.
Take the loss like a man and quit crying like a little girl… Ole Miss clearly beat state… No excuses… Your team lost… And Dak did nothing the 3 or 4 years he was there… End of story
I admit, the better team won, as I stated in other posts. But I don’t think it is an exagerration to say there is more smack talked by people with ole miss by their name on this site than any other. Right, he did nothing, that’s why his name will be near the top of so many leader sheets in the SEC record book. I don’t understand how it is better to claim the people you beat aren’t as good as they are. Some might say that is just stupid.
I wasn’t even talking about the game above, are you high?
Yeah I know, setting 38 school records is doing nothing.
Just a loser of a QB with nothing to brag out.
…why would you hate Mullen just because he has a star quarterback???
Because they can’t stand to acknowledge that there could be anything at all about or associated with state? Not sure why that’s so hard.
Buy Congrats on the season Ole miss. The adorned 2013 recruiting class finally took Ole miss to a finish ahead of state in the sec for the first time since Mullen arrived.
He didn’t win 9 games with CHRIS RELF?
Shame for this great senior class to go out like this but oh well, I still appreciate all they’ve done for the program. Let’s go all in for the bowl game and send the seniors out with a big win. Hail State!
Ya a senior class that accomplished what? Seriously who have y’all beaten that was any good? Cause I sure don’t recall any big win.
We didn’t lose to Memphis.
We lost 9+ starters, but still found a way to man handle y’all !
And it felt almost as good as knocking you out of the playoffs last year, LoL
We still didn’t lose to Memphis.
You still didn’t beat LSU, Bama, A&M or Ole Miss
Freeze couldn’t develop a QB if his life depended on it. Your best Ole Miss team has 3 losses and loses all of its stars. GL BOL.
Are you serious? How can you say that Freeze can’t develop a QB. Chad Kelly is arguably the best QB in the SEC and Bo holds a ton of records. Those are the only two QBs that that have played under Freeze. So what are you talking about, you fool
I do get tired of how we outscore people after the first quarter. I can appreciate an 8-4 mark, but stop saying that stuff, please. We play great in the fourth quarter, good, let’s work on playing great FOR four quarters. We played like crap in the fourth quarter last year and still won those games (not GT, definitely not GT). Ole Miss didn’t play a stellar fourth, but 21pts before you can finish your first overpriced beverage is a cushion that can let them slow down, and actually means they should slow down so we can’t make up the difference. Rufus Warren and Justin Senior, maybe they make a small difference, but neither of them are very good, either. We have two defensive backs that shouldn’t see the field again until they learn to tackle.
Ole Miss and Mississippi are BOTH a hell of a lot more relevant than they were 10 or even 5 years ago. PERIOD!! Mullen and Freeze have put them both on the map. Ole Miss is able to recruit again like they did in the 50’s and 60’s. Mississippi St while always had a pretty good defense can now score and have the ability to beat any team. Both schools and programs have made major steps. People around the country are watching the “Egg-Bowl” now. It’s not just a Mississippi thing anymore. Both fan bases should be happy. Win your bowls and lets strap it on next year.
Mississippi State not Mississippi.
Thanks. Nice to hear a fan from other sec programs not say something like “its still MS, who cares?” Lol.
Ole miss fans really chaps my bottom, fishing for complements we all said good win but still going on and on… Than Mullen is a great coach and Mullen and miss state shaped and developed dak into the QB he is today the same QB ole miss and the media wrote off saying he can’t throw but look what you saying now, the same Mississippi State that was picked last in the west division and Dan Mullen done it the right way recruiting honestly! Can any ole miss fan tell me how a unknown high school coach take over a 2-11 program and get 3 top players in their position and a handful of 4 star athletes to Mississippi? And don’t say the program because it suck before he got there
In his defense, I’ve met freeze and he seems a nice guy. May not be under his direction. The only consistent story I have heard from “successful” Ole miss fans is that the boosters had had enough.
Wouldn’t be the first time, Sherrill still has one of their boosters, the NCAA, and one of the investigators in court.
We’re Ole Miss and just pay them off !
Farmers … LOL, don’t yall know this by now ;)
Sorry teddy bears I know you think Starkville is a hellhole but I don’t recall any of our players attempting suicide. Take your pure lack of class and shove it up your spoon fed behind. Ole piss fans are really good at getting behind a keyboard and popping off at the mouth.
Well, you’re officially the biggest peace of sh|t here – talk about classless.
Any State here that speak up about the fu$ker, or do yall think the same way.
Say what you want just stating facts. I’m forced to stoop to the rebels level every now and then
Why don’t you go take a hit of acid, let me know if you don’t try to spread your wings and fly off.
Sorry man. Forget @StarkFisher
are you kidding me? We lost. Get over it. Ole Miss has the better team. How dare you stoop to such a low level? Once this game crosses over from football and into attacking individuals human lives, lives that are precious no matter what FOOTBALL team they associate with, you’ve gone way over the line. Take off that Maroon and White until you can better represent the University you say you support. Sorry Ole Miss fans, and y’all played a great game.
It is amazing that an Ole Miss fan would actually try to discredit the factual, indisputable accomplishments of Dak Prescott. In addition to breaking school records, he has broken national records passingEli Manning, and is on a list with Tim Tebow and Johnny Manziel. He is amazing, and the fact that they try to say he isn’t is laughable. Facts and records don’t lie. I think a person who says this is in serious denial. Nationally, Miss. State and Ole Miss both are criticized and never given credit for anything unless we are really, legitimately great. So, trust me, all the great press he gets is well-deserved. He is a great leader and person. Dan Mullen has been a great coach for us as well. When he came, we beat Ole miss 3 years in a row, so I think he has been successful. The great QB’s like Tebow, Chris Leak and Alex Smith have all credited him for their development. Tim Tebow comes to his house and stays when he is in Starkville, and Dak wanted to come to State because of Dan Mullen. So, get over it. Ole Miss has done well also. Yesterday, we were both 8-3 teams. Ole Miss beat us because we turned the ball over 3 times in the first half, and dug a deep hole. Our O line was under manned. I think they were the better team last night. I am sad that Dak didn’t win his last game because he has done so much for us. Those 14 seniors are the winningest group since 1947. The State of Mississippi for once has gotten some respect because both universities have done well. I lived in Florida for 10 years, and they didn’t have much respect for the Mississippi schools. In fact, they got us confused. I quickly corrected them. After meeting people, they were shocked that I was from Mississippi because I was intelligent, well-dressed, had class and confidence. After moving back home, our two teams had a resurgence, and I don’t have so much hate for Ole Miss anymore because I know how our state is viewed. It is better when we all are doing well. I do, however, have a low tolerance for dishonesty and erroneous statements. Last season was our big dream season where we were #1 for 5 weeks and had a shot at the SEC Champs. We didn’t quite make it, but we were there. This season, Ole Miss had a chance. But, Bama won out. . My entire family graduated from State, and we LOVE the university. Some fans don’t even have affiliation with the schools they root for. How many Bama fans just jump on the bandwagon and buy that tshirt? I wish HailState would have won yesterday. But, we are still 8-4 and headed to yet another bowl game. Congrats to OM. We will be back. #Hailstate4ever #wrapmeinmaroon&white
Credit where credit is due department- Ole Miss defense has been better under Hugh Freeze this last two seasons than I’ve ever seen them.
After 12 games of an SEC West schedule, I’m surprised there are *survivors*. Injuries are expected. No doubt they cost the Dogs. O-line play was dreadful and that has consequences.
Ole Miss Dominated the MSST team, it was never really an “edge of your” seat game. The last Rebel drive was classy, ran to the red zone, then took a knee so as to not “run up” the score. Well done Rebels!
