Zach Arnett gave his thoughts on Mississippi State freshman quarterback Chris Parson, noting positives but also things he needs to work on.

Parson made his college football debut in the Bulldogs’ 24-3 loss to Kentucky on Saturday. He completed 6-of-14 passes for 67 yards. On the ground, however, he carried the ball four times for -20 yards.

At his press conference on Monday, Arnett said there are “some real positives” from Parson’s debut, including the timing on Parson’s ball release.

Arnett noted Parson’s ability to “play off your back foot” and drop for potential options downfield.

“When he did that, he looked really good,” Arnett said.

Parson also had the ability to “move around and extend plays,” but Arnett added most of the time that got his freshman quarterback “into more trouble.”

“It exposes you to blindside rushers,” Arnett said.

All in all, Arnett said, Parson played with confidence.

“He got a lot of valuable experience and did some good things,” Arnett said. “Other people gravitate towards that (confidence) and it gets people going. But he knows there’s a lot of things he has to do better.”

Mississippi State (4-5) takes on Texas A&M this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
