Zach Arnett and Mississippi State will aim to snap a 2-game losing skid when they take on visiting No. 12 Alabama on Saturday night.

Mississippi State lost 37-30 at South Carolina to drop to 2-2. However, the head coach liked what he saw out of his offense after his coordinator Kevin Barbay made the move from the sidelines to upstairs.

During a recent press conference, Arnett explains the rationale behind the switch from the 1st-year Bulldogs offensive coordinator.

“He just told me he thought he could go up there and might change up the dynamic. I think every coach, every play caller likes doing it. You love the view from the top. You get an All-22 view,” Arnett said. “What you lose out on is being down there on the sideline and getting those personal interactions with the players and feeling the energy and that stuff.”

The move came after Mississippi State scored 14 points in a loss against LSU.

“Obviously, he was calling it from down on the sidelines and he didn’t think we were getting good enough results, so he said he’s got to do something different,” Arnett said. “Obviously, the definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing and expecting to get different results. He made a change.”

In the loss against South Carolina, Mississippi State amassed 519 total yards with 20 1st downs. Quarterback Will Rogers passed for 487 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

“It appears that we moved the ball better. Made quite a few explosive plays. He called some really good plays for the defenses they were in,” Arnett said. “Hopefully that will continue to be the case with him up there.”

Barbay took over the position after previous offensive coordinator stints at Stephen F. Austin, Central Michigan, and App State.

Arnett is aware of the task at hand and lavished praise on Alabama heading into the contest. Alabama at Mississippi State is slated for a 9 p.m. EST kick off on Saturday and will be televised on ESPN.
