5 impact players to watch on Missouri as it faces Georgia
Missouri hasn’t lost back-to-back games since 2012, but the team plays an opponent that is perhaps even more desperate than the defending SEC East champs.
The Tigers travel to Athens to take on Georgia, which has lost back-to-back games (to Alabama and Tennessee, respectively) as well as its place atop the division. With division leader Florida losing QB Will Grier for the season due to his suspension, both teams will want to seize the opportunity and get back to winning ways.
Here are five players to watch when Missouri goes between the hedges:
1. DT Josh Augusta – The junior is always due for his two tackles each game, but Augusta will be imperative in plugging holes against Georgia’s impressive rushing attack. Tigers fans may be relieved that Nick Chubb won’t be playing because of his injury, but they were saying the same thing last season when Chubb entered for the suspended Todd Gurley. Plus, Georgia’s top-tier run blockers will still be playing.
2. LG Brad McNulty – Missouri’s offensive line as a whole was bad against Florida, but McNulty will be in the spotlight mainly because he is seemingly becoming the permanent starter at left guard, where the Tigers have received the least consistent production on the offensive line this season. He is now the fourth senior starter on the line and will be tasked with continuing to help Missouri’s run game improve. McNulty has also struggled against top SEC opposition like Georgia, going all the way back to 2012 when he was used as an emergency starter.
3. WR J’Mon Moore – The last time Missouri won at Georgia, it had the help of former receiver/all-around playmaker Bud Sasser. Sasser is gone now, and Moore is the best edge threat the Tigers have left. Moore leads the team in receiving yards and is 2nd in receptions, but his 2 touchdowns were thrown by Maty Mauk. New Tigers starting QB Drew Lock will want to have things click with Moore if they hope to have any chance of upsetting the Bulldogs.
4. K Andrew Baggett – Missouri’s kicker gave the Tigers their only points last week with a first quarter field goal but also missed a 53-yard attempt that symbolized the beginning of the end against Florida. He has only missed one other kick this season. Baggett is 2-for-3 in field goals against the Bulldogs in his career with a missed extra point.
4. RB Russell Hansbrough– Remember when everyone thought Hansbrough would be the one to carry the Tigers back to an SEC East Division title and to Atlanta? Well, that journey has been delayed as Hansbrough has experienced a lingering ankle injury. Hansbrough has only carried the ball 33 times this season for 166 yards but is averaging a healthy 5.0 yards per carry. Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said the captain should be 100 percent this week, so maybe we’ll finally get to see that “team-on-his-back” Hansbrough.
