After being run off at Louisville, Bobby Petrino has proven he still has the ability to coach — at least, at the FCS level.

The Missouri State coach was recently named Missouri Valley Football Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to their first FCS playoff appearance since 1990.

In his first season leading the Missouri State program, Petrino led the Bears to a 5-1 conference record — the team went 5-4 overall — and a share of the league championship title. Missouri State won just one game last season and was predicted to finish ninth in the league’s preseason poll.

Prior to landing the Missouri State job, Petrino coached at Louisville from 2014-2018. During that time, Lamar Jackson won the 2016 Heisman Trophy playing for Petrino but Louisville went 2-8 in 2018 after Jackson moved on to the NFL.

Following that terrible season, Petrino was fired and the culture of the Louisville program was widely criticized by those that experienced it.

During his time leading the Arkansas program, the Razorbacks went 34-17 and advanced to the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 2010 season before the coach’s infamous motorcycle crash and ensuing scandal.

Missouri State’s upcoming first-round FCS playoff game against North Dakota starts at 3 p.m. which can be viewed on ESPN’s streaming services.
