Can Mizzou compete for SEC title next year? Cuonzo Martin thinks there’s a chance

The Missouri Tigers have had more than their fair share of bad luck the past couple of years. Last year, Michael Porter Jr. missed most of the year with an injury.

This year, his younger brother, Jontay, suffered a season-ending injury before the season even started. Add in a few losses in games that they’ve led by 10 or more points and it’s been a rough stretch for Cuonzo Martin’s Tigers.

However, if that luck changes, Martin believes the Tigers can win the SEC title next year. He cited health as the biggest factor moving forward (via KansasCity.com):

โ€œWhen youโ€™re healthy you have a chance,โ€ he said. โ€œYou have to have good guards. I think weโ€™re moving toward that. Your key guys have to be healthy. And then you go from there. I like where weโ€™re going as a program. Every step you have to get better. If the pain of losing, missing shots, not blocking out, if that doesnโ€™t pain you, then this is probably not the program for you. You have to have a love and passion to be great at this thing.โ€

The Tigers will lose some key players this offseason, but Martin is recruiting well, so we’ll see if they can improve from this year’s record.

Currently, with six regular-season games remaining, the Tigers are 12-12 overall and 3-9 in SEC action.
