Since leaving Missouri, E.J. Gaines’ career has been negatively impacted by injuries. And on Sunday, the former Tiger cornerback sustained another.

According to Daryl Ruiter of WFAN, Gaines was carted off at Cleveland Browns practice with what appeared to be a “significant right knee injury.” The Browns did not comment on the injury, and coach Hue Jackson told the media after practice that he was hopeful it wouldn’t be too serious.

Gaines signed with the Browns during the offseason after previously playing for the Rams and Bills. He played for the Rams from 2014-16, but missed all of 2015 with an injury. Last year, Gaines started 11 games and had one interception in his only season with the Bills.

During training camp, Gaines has been competing for a starting role opposite rookie Denzel Ward. Jackson acknowledged that losing Gaines for a significant period of time would be a blow to his team.

Gaines played four seasons at Missouri from 2010-13. He was a first-team All-SEC selection as a senior in 2013, when he had five interceptions and 75 tackles.
