Eli Drinkwitz was a man of the people on Friday in the St. Louis area, as the Missouri coach gave away $10,000 in free gas to area motorists.

Drinkwitz explained that since the Tigers have several players from the area on his team, it’s important to give back to the community, KSDK reported. There are 19 St. Louis players on the current roster.

“We don’t want to always be taking from this city, we also want to give back to this city and so this is an opportunity for us to do that,” Drinkwitz said.

The coach established a window from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday when gas was given away at the Crown BP at 300 S. Jefferson Avenue until the allotment was reached. Drinkwitz did it along with the Demetrious Johnson Foundation and Cofman Townsley Attorneys at Law.

Luther Burden III, the star wide receiver recruit out of the St. Louis area, was alongside Drinkwitz pumping gas and explaining why it was important to do it.

“Bless people the way I was blessed,” he said. “This is part of why I chose to stay home, to give back to my community.”

Drinkwitz, who has already made it a priority to recruit the St. Louis area, has likely picked up several more fans after this community event.
