Eli Drinkwitz discusses addition of Jack Abraham, Mizzou's QB battle
Eli Drinkwitz and the Missouri Tigers looked into adding a big-name transfer QB this offseason, showing interest in JT Daniels, Jayden Daniels and Gerry Bohanon at various points.
Eventually, the Tigers landed former Southern Miss and Mississippi State QB Jack Abraham via the transfer portal.
During his media availability at SEC spring meetings on Tuesday, Drinkwitz discussed what Abraham brings to the Mizzou QB room (via the Daily Journal):
“Jack became a possibility for us. Our QB room has two younger guys in it, and we’re looking for someone with some experience,” Drinkwitz said.
“In our first six games, we have three on the road in really difficult environments … Manhattan, Kansas; Auburn, Alabama; and Gainesville, Florida. We wanted to have some experience in that room.”
When asked if any quarterbacks had an edge in the battle to be QB1 this fall, Drinkwitz simply said “no.”
Will Abraham manage to win the job when fall camp opens? We’ll see how the Mizzou QB battle plays out over the next few months.
Their offense will be mostly OK, it’s the defense that is problematic. They finished second to last in the conference last year in yards per play (6.4).
Yeah that was a brand new defense that didn’t work. The defense nor those responsible for installing it are there anymore.
Good to hear. Maybe they’re employed with Shakespeare’s pizza.
LOL! Shakespeare’s is awesome but no, Wilks is with the Carolina Panthers now.
Lack of Experience. It’s kind of his own fault had he not been so unreasonably stubborn on sticking with Baze for as long as he did while he hobbled around the last 7 games or so. Cook and Macon would both be much more experienced, maybe not to the extent of some of the transfers but still.
Abraham put up really good numbers when he was able to stay healthy, Horn Macon and Cook might be watching on the sidelines while he steals the spotlight this year.
Tyler Macon should not start until he becomes more predictable to his blockers and receivers, less predictable to the opponents pass coverage. Cook has only barely rose above Macon, making me question his vision and decision making power. Yes the senior transfer could start. And can a freshman baseballer quarterback get ready to start in his brief time? Will Drinkwitz use student body left and right again.?? If so a lot of running backs could look good. Drinkwitz is going to throw the football and run draw plays and his receiver corp is deep and ready to exploit a lot of the field. Macon will run the Dual Threat playbook early in the game but don’t expect it to show up for more than about 3 possessions per game.
The Spring Game showed that both QBs have made a lot of progress and are healthy. It also showed that both are seeking to expand their playbook execution and in a Drinkwitz offense complexity is a big asset. Contrary to popular ideas, it’s not absolute that a QB take over a game and win it, it only required that he doesn’t screw up and lose it. Young players are learning this, seniors know how to let the Team execute the success and cover somebodies back when the unexpected happens, hence the Quarterback Drink just picked up. Absolutely a good move if this Senior is a top thinker
Sam Horn????
Daniels opting out of the SEC for Couch Fire U looked like a really weak and pathetic white flag moment.
Or maybe they promised him many millions in NIL, either way hope he enjoys those wins in the Big Nothing.
Don’t you think he had a lot better support than his peers in his previous starting job? Don’t be surprised if his 2022 look is also noticeably short of 1st round draft choice.
