Eli Drinkwitz reacts to Matthew Sluka situation at UNLV, calls for more structure in CFB
Eli Drinkwitz is never afraid to share his opinion.
The Missouri head coach appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show on Tuesday and was asked about the Matthew Sluka situation at UNLV. If you haven’t heard, the starting QB of the undefeated team announced his decision to enter the transfer portal midweek over an NIL dispute.
“It’s disappointing that this is having to be played out over national television,” said Drinkwitz. “It’s gonna affect real football teams and real families, and that’s hard.”
As Drinkwitz mentioned, it’s unfortunate that an undefeated team is now dealing with this issue. It’s also unfortunate that Sluka’s career is put on hold over money.

“The truth of the situation is this is what’s going to continue to happen because there aren’t guardrails in place,” Drinkwitz explained. “We’re having to operate in a system, where, there really isn’t a system.”
While most now agree that college athletes deserve compensation, many have also realized that regulations are necessary. With NIL being so new, there currently aren’t any standardized regulations every program must follow.
“UNLV’s having the greatest season they’ve had in a long time, and now that’s in jeopardy because of, you know, this situation,” said the coach. “I hate it for everybody involved. Everybody involved. But really the blame lies at the feet of the system in place.”
Drinkwitz’s squad has a bye week in Week 5 before playing at Texas A&M in Week 6.
