LOOK: Mizzou fans, media members rip Derek Dooley's final play call in Liberty Bowl loss to Oklahoma State
Drew Lock is surprisingly athletic, but when you put the ball in his hands, giving the Mizzou quarterback an option to throw the ball is always a good idea.
However, needing only one yard against Oklahoma State on Monday in the Liberty Bowl with the game on the line, OC Derek Dooley called a play that had Lock roll to his right without a pass option.
You can see the awful play, which took far too long to develop, in the video below:

Naturally, it came up short, costing the Tigers a chance to complete a comeback victory, and fans were not happy. Rightfully so, they took to Twitter to blast Dooley for the questionable (at best) decision to put the ball in Lock’s hands without a chance to throw:
We have just been Derek Dooley’d.

Just horrible by Mizzou

What a debacle for Missouri. My goodness.

Derek Dooley think he was calling that play for Kelly Bryant?

Your impending 9 p.m. #NYE blackout is sponsored in part by Derek Dooley

I'll let you Mizzou fans in on a little Derek Dooley secret, since I'm also a Cowboys fan. The Cowboys got rid of him because he sucked

Derek Dooley you have been magnificent all year. All year. I wanted the Drew Lock keeper literally the ENTIRE second half! But not on fourth down! Anytime other than fourth down!!!!!

So we can fire Derek Dooley now right???????
— FIRE DEREK DOOLEY (@sportsrealists) January 1, 2019
Drew Lock had just 27 designed runs all season, so naturally on 4th down with the game on the line Derek Dooley takes it out of the hands of his many playmakers and leaves it up to Drew Lock's legs 🤦🏾♂️

Sending the bill for a round of shots tonight to my friend Derek Dooley

Drew Lock deserves a military medal for having to play in a Derek Dooley offense. What a dramatic misuse of talent.

Boneheaded calls by Derek Dooley lost this game for Missouri

Horrible call. The opposing defense was horrible. There is no need to try and catch a horrible defense off balance. Just play to your strength. What a pathetic way to end the season.
I very well could be wrong, but that last play looked like an option or some type of zone read. I don’t think it was a designed QB run.
Definitely looked like a designed run to me. Lock never looks downfield.
If it was a designed run to the right, it was doomed from the start…we didn’t have enough blockers on that side. 3 black jerseys closed on Lock. It may have been successful if it went left instead.
That was the idea. Tried to catch them sleeping and it would have worked just fine with anyone who had speed. Dooley apparently doesn’t understand though that Lock was going to be no faster on that play than he has been all season long. It was an awful play call and an awful way for DooDom to send Lock out.
I stand corrected
Sorry Mizzou fans, but Dooley was called the worst HC in history for a reason. Drew Lock was y’all’s offense. Once Lock leaves, Dooley gonna shine and get Odom fired. Hope he signed a good contract. The man is known for payouts after being fired.
Dooley and Odom have the same agent, apparently agents decide who should be hired as coaches at Mizzou.
@bryanchip Odom has not one but TWO coordinators with no previous experience as a coordinator but it shouldn’t be a surprise that a rookie HC makes a lot of rookie mistakes, Odom had to bring in his own brother to coach LB’s, apparently.
No you’re right about that. We should be poaching an OC that has real/noteworthy experience in the field of coaching a real offense. Perhaps snag that OC at Washington State or Wiscy. Not hire one of the worst coaches in Tennesee history. Plus a defensive coordinator who doesn’t have any idea of what he is doing, things need to change before next season or we will have trouble even making it to a 7 win season.
And what inexperienced HC hired an OC with no OC experience again?
Nothing but OSU black jerseys on the right side. No blocking if this was a called play.
For a first year play caller DD has had some terrible decisions, but overall it fared out decently enough and got us a new QB for another year. This call wasn’t great, I would’ve preferred quick slants or some sort of post route seeing the safety dip so low. Being a Mizzou fan always has its challenges. But, the program is always improving and DD will get another year to change the fortune of this program.
Looking forward to next year!
I agree with your opinion. Fourth down calls are really iffy at best. I think it was the third down call that was bad. I feel they should have run the pitch option on third down and fourth down since we were stuffed up the middle.
Somebody remarked Dooley must have thought he was calling that play for Kelly Bryant, but that was a very bad call for anybody whenit’s 4th and 1 for the last chance to win the game. No blocking and no release valve to receive.
1st and 10 at the OSU 18 and you run it 4 straight times with 1st round NFL QB? WOW. That was a 2nd and 3 call, not 4th down call. At least give Lock an option to throw. Not as bad as fake punt on 4th and 11 vs Bama, but close…..
I think it was the third down call that was bad. they should have tried the option pitch on third down. But what really lost the game was special teams. If we made the extra point and the field goal we would only need a field goal to win. Yes the defense gave up way too much but came up with two big turnovers. What really makes me angry is the reversal of the catch on the 7 yard line. I really did not think it should have been reversed, but if it had a booth review they should have called targeting. The defender clearly hit the receiver in the mouth with his helmet. Can anyone explain why targeting was not called? Worst refereeing I’ve seen in a long time.
exactly right, and the rough thing about it?, it was the third targeting foul of the game against OSU, which clearly shows they came to the stadium knowing they had to cheat to win. In this case take out the opponents best players and trade an average to below average disqualified player. My opinion of the OSU coaching staff has taken a big turn south.
