Mizzou had exciting news to share on Thursday. The athletic program has received a massive donation for a football project.
MU announced that an anonymous donor has given the program $25 million to go toward the Memorial Stadium Improvements Project.
“Under Coach Drinkwitz’s leadership, we have seen how Mizzou football unites the entire State of Missouri,” University of Missouri Board of Curators Chair Robin Wenneker said in a program release. “Mizzou’s football program and Memorial Stadium are a point of pride for Missourians and the greater Mizzou family. We give a special thank you to our generous donor for supporting this historic project. Congratulations to Director of Athletics Laird Veatch and the Tiger Scholarship Fund staff for securing an extraordinary gift that reflects the profound impact Mizzou has on our state.”
Mizzou Athletics seeks to raise $125 million in leadership philanthropic support toward the $250 million Memorial Stadium project. With the new donation, Mizzou has raised approximately $90 million toward the goal.
“This generous gift will help ensure that Memorial Stadium remains a cornerstone for our community, and it speaks to the lasting legacy we are building for our student-athletes and fans,” University of Missouri President Mun Choi said via a school release. “We are deeply grateful for this support, and I am confident that the Mizzou family will continue to step up to make this project a success.”
Mizzou is off to an undefeated start with 4 home wins to begin the 2024 campaign. The Tigers are in Year 5 of Eli Drinkwitz’s tenure, and are hoping to make the College Football Playoff for the first time. The No. 11 Tigers are off in Week 5 and make their first road trip of the season in Week 6, traveling to College Station to take on No. 24 Texas A&M.
Groundbreaking on the stadium project is set for after the 2024 home finale against Arkansas. The project is set to be completed in time for Mizzou’s 2026 season.
“This donation is a powerful testament to the passion and commitment of Mizzou supporters,” Director of Athletics Laird Veatch said in a release. “It brings us closer to achieving our vision for the future of Memorial Stadium and signals that we are building something truly special here in Columbia. As Coach Drinkwitz’s program continues to thrive in the Southeastern Conference, we will need more philanthropic leaders to join in supporting this transformational project and continue Mizzou’s incredible momentum.”
