Underdog Picks for Championship Week
Here’s a look at some of our favorite picks for Saturday’s action:
Fernando Mendoza, Indiana Hoosiers QB: Lower than 208.5 passing yards
Ohio State has befuddled opposing quarterbacks this season, and it’ll be the toughest defense Mendoza has faced so far. Oregon’s defense is pretty great too, and Mendoza just barely went over this hypothetical total against the Ducks. It may not be the wisest move to go against the Heisman contender, but I’m of the firm belief that Ohio State is still way better than everybody in college football thanks in part to that monster defense. Also, because of their recent struggles against the Wolverines, the Buckeyes are going to be giving a little more for a big ten title.
LJ Martin, BYU RB: Lower 72.5 rushing yards
LJ Martin is an incredible running back, but very few have seen success against this Texas Tech run defense this season. The Red Raiders are allowing opponents just 68 yards per game, by far the lowest total of any team in the country. Not to mention, Texas Tech destroyed BYU in this department last time around. Finally, I just don’t trust the Cougars. It seems like the same story for BYU every season: Have a great regular season, then fumble the bag with the finish line in sight. I’d be surprised if this isn’t a similar outcome to last time’s matchup.
Ty Simpson, Alabama QB: Higher 1.5 passing touchdowns
Ty Simpson had an excellent outing against the Bulldogs last time around, and the deadly accurate QB is likely in for another great game on Saturday. Alabama has been inconsistent this season, but Kalen DeBoer has historically done a great job at getting his teams fired up for massive matchups like this one. Simpson was one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC this season, so I expect him to go out on a high note.
