Georgia was the best team in college baseball at hitting home runs this season. In the Athens Regional opener vs. Binghamton, the Bulldogs were up to their old tricks on blasting their way to a resounding win.
Entering the NCAA Tournament as the No. 7 national seed, Georgia blasted 5 home runs, including multiple home runs by 2 players, in a 20-4 win over Binghamton. It moves the Bulldogs into Saturday’s winner’s bracket in emphatic fashion.
The stars in this one were infielder Tre Phelps and outfielder Daniel Jackson. They both hit 2 home runs in the onslaught, combining to go 6-for-8 at the plate with 11 RBI and 7 runs scored.
Kolby Branche added 4 hits and 3 runs scored while Nolan McCarthy put one of the exclamation points on the outing with a towering 8th-inning home run:

On the mound, Leighton Finley certainly made things easier for Georgia’s pitching staff. He covered 6.2 innings with just 2 earned runs allowed, striking out 7 and issuing just 1 walk. Zach Brown covered the final 2.1 innings in the blowout, allowing the Bulldogs to keep the majority of the pitching staff available for Saturday’s game.
The Bulldogs led the nation this season in total home runs with 133 and HRs per game at 2.33. The long ball powered them to an opening win on Friday, and they’ll likely need to keep that up throughout the postseason.
Georgia moves into Saturday’s winner’s bracket game, currently set for 6 pm ET. The Bulldogs will face the winner of Oklahoma State vs. Duke, and whoever come out on top Saturday night will have a big leg up on advancing to the Super Regionals.
