Tim Corbin and Vanderbilt took advantage of the Sunday before Memorial Day to don their “Salute to Service” uniforms. That just happened to be the championship game for the SEC Baseball Tournament, with the Commodores outlasting Ole Miss for the title.
The special uniforms allowed Vanderbilt to get the win in style with the olive drab jerseys featuring red, white and blue accents throughout. After the game, SEC Network host Peter Burns had a chance to ask the head coach about the significance of those jerseys.
It was especially memorable for the head coach to have his team in the special uniforms heading into Memorial Day:
“I just think before you are a Vanderbilt University student-athlete, before you come from Louisiana, or South Carolina, or Virginia, or New Hampshire, you’re an American citizen,” said Corbin. “I think our ability, just to understand that, is a small level of gratitude.
“Whether it’s the anthem or whether it’s the uniforms, we’re not trying to put on something and say we’re soldiers. It’s not that. It’s more about the representation of our country more than anything else. We’re very fortunate to be in this country and have the opportunities that we have, so it’s just a small thank you.”

It was definitely a special moment for Vanderbilt and a great way to cap the SEC’s action ahead of Memorial Day. Now, the Commodores and the rest of the country will wait to find out their path to the College World Series with the NCAA Tournament to begin this week.
