Tony Vitello has delivered plenty of in-game interviews as the head coach at Tennessee. However, few have been as positively memorable as the one he delivered on Saturday.
Facing Cincinnati, the Vols were looking to roll into the finals of the Knoxville Regional. If that happens, Tennessee will have 2 chances to win 1 more game in order to reach the Super Regionals.
During that game, Vitello donned the headset for ESPN in the 3rd inning for the customary in-game interview. It just so happened Dean Curley was at the dish, and he got a perfect pitch to drill.
As the ball was flying, Vitello delivered a picture-perfect call of the ongoing scene.
“Dean’s strong, so it would be nice if it would go over the fence,” cracked Vitello.
The ball did just that, hitting about halfway up the batter’s eye in center field. The stats on the batted ball came back with a 107 MPH exit velocity for Curley on a blast that was projected at 404 feet.
“The strength coach isn’t even out here,” Vitello said.
Too often, these in-game interviews have gone in a sour direction. For once, Vitello was able to bask in the moment of a big-time blast while live on the screen.
While the Vols struggled down the stretch, they maintained some of the best odds to win the College World Series in the country entering the NCAA Tournament. Fans can use the TN sports betting apps to stay locked into the latest odds and offers on all things Tennessee.
