ACC basketball player hilariously sums up team’s season: ‘We were ass but, we weren’t that bad’

Virginia Tech’s 2024-25 basketball season was not one to remember.

The Hokies finished the year 13-19, going 8-12 in ACC play. One highlight for the team was Tobi Lawal, a transfer from VCU who averaged 12.4 points and 7 rebounds per game.

Lawal offered a humorous postmortem, noting that preseason expectations were low. The Hokies were predicted to finish near the bottom of an 18-team conference and ended up being the No. 10 seed in the ACC Tournament.

“My team, I’m proud of how far we came,” Lawal said. “What did they have us in the preseason? Maybe 14th or 15th? They thought we were going to be ass. I mean, we were still ass but, you know, we weren’t that bad. You know what I’m saying? We beat expectations.”

The question asked for Lawal’s thoughts on the team and himself, so the amusing quotes continued.

“About myself, I’m just happy I improved,” he said. “I had no idea I was going to have the season I had. I didn’t think I had a good season, but I had no idea I was going to improve, coming from the A-10, because I didn’t do nothing. I ain’t never done anything. Most of this stuff is very new to me, so it’s getting me far. I’m just trying to understand and process as quickly as possible.”

Virginia Tech will seek to improve upon “not that bad” for the 2025-26 campaign and get back into the postseason picture.
