Billy Donovan, who won a pair of national titles with the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007, has stepped down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, according to a report from Shams Charania Tuesday morning.
Crucially, Donovan is not being fired by the Bulls. Chicago wanted to keep Donovan, who decided to exit after 6 seasons after “extensive meetings” last week, per ESPN. At age 60, it appears Donovan still wants to coach basketball in the near future.
With this news, 3 NBA franchises are now looking for head coaches: The Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks.
Donovan hasn’t coached in college basketball in over 10 years, since leaving Florida in 2015, but he’s definitely a candidate to return were a big-name job to open up. Donovan was mentioned by a few as a potential suitor for the North Carolina job, which was filled by former Nuggets head coach Michael Malone a few weeks ago.
Donovan boasts nearly 40 years of coaching experience, first starting as an assistant at Kentucky in 1989, then coaching for Marshall and Florida before landing in the NBA. He coached Oklahoma City from 2015-2020 before landing with the Bulls in 2021.
