It’s time to scratch one name off the list. Brad Stevens has removed himself from consideration for the North Carolina head coaching position, according to CBS Sports.

Stevens currently resides in the front office of the Boston Celtics. In 2021, Stevens was named the president of basketball operations after being the head coach of the Celtics for 8 seasons. In 2024, he was named the 2023-24 NBA Executive of the Year. He was considered a long shot for the UNC position, but his decision allows UNC to focus on more realistic candidates.

Here’s a look at the current favorites for the job on Kalshi:

Stevens hasn’t coached in the college game since 2013, when he left to become the head coach of the Boston Celtics. Stevens spent 4 seasons as a Butler assistant before becoming the head coach in 2007. In 8 seasons as the head coach, Stevens led Butler to two Final Fours and two national championship appearances in back-to-back years.

Stevens’ name is always one that is floated during high-profile coaching searches. He’s an Indiana native but has turned down the Hoosiers’ head coaching position multiple times since his move to the NBA.

It doesn’t seem that Stevens has a desire to return to the sidelines anytime soon.
