The NCAA Tournament is rapidly approaching but the madness of March has already begun.
Another example happened on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Big South tournament. Winthrop (22-10, 13-3) miraculously scored 12 points in 45 seconds in a 86-81 comeback victory vs. Charleston Southern (15-17, 6-10).
After trimming the deficit to 81-74, Winthrop then incredibly scored eight points in 13 seconds to seal the improbable victory. Josh Meo kicked off that stretch with a 3-pointer, which came after an offensive rebound on a missed 3-pointer. Winthrop then used a full-court press, which resulted in a steal and ensuing and-1 from Kody Clouet.
Then Charleston Southern couldn’t get the ball past halfcourt again, as Meo snagged another steal and Logan Duncomb drained the go-ahead lay-up. Charleston Southern still had other late opportunities to tilt the game back in its favor but none were successful.
Duncomb paced Winthrop with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.
Next up for Winthrop is a matchup in the semifinals vs. No. 6 Presbyterian on March 7 at 2:30 p.m. ET from Johnson City, Tennessee. The contest will be televised on ESPN+. According to Kalshi, Winthrop has a 21% chance to win the Big South Tournament.
