De’Aaron Fox’s season has come to an end, with the San Antonio Spurs point guard set to undergo surgery on his left pinky finger, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Thursday.
The former Kentucky star had played through a damaged tendon but will now be shut down for the rest of the year with the Spurs, at 27-37, not officially out of the NBA playoff race but a long shot to get to a spot in the Play-In Tournament.
Fox was traded from the Sacramento Kings, who drafted him 5th overall in 2017, to the Spurs on Feb. 3 as part of a 3-team deal that included the Chicago Bulls. Through Wednesday, he had averaged 23.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.3 assists.
As for the Spurs, they have their eyes set on the offseason. Second-year sensation Victor Wembanyama, named to his first All-Star team in 2025, was declared out of the remainder of the year in February due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.
They’ve also been playing without Gregg Popovich on the sideline, with the legendary head coach still recovering from a mild stroke he suffered in November. Mitch Johnson has served as interim head coach during Popovich’s absence.
