Doug Gottlieb lands Division I head coaching job, will reportedly continue daily radio show
Doug Gottlieb has been named the next head basketball coach at Green Bay.
The Phoenix announced the hire on Tuesday afternoon. Gottlieb replaces Sundance Wicks, who spent 1 year with the program before leaving for Wyoming earlier this offseason.
“It is an honor beyond measure to be named the 10th Men’s Basketball coach in UWGB history. I would like to thank Chancellor Mike Alexander and Josh Moon for this incredible opportunity,” Gottlieb said in a release. “Every kid has a dream growing up, some want to be firefighter, others want to be president, I have always wanted to be a head basketball coach at the Division I level.
“As a kid who was born at Columbia Hospital and a dad who was, at that a head coach in the UW system, it is even more amazing to get this opportunity to come back to Wisconsin and live out my dreams. Green Bay Basketball will be a family, and you are all welcome to join the family. Together, we are going to play great basketball, bring positive attention to the Fox Valley and UWGB community and have a heck of a lot of fun doing it. I can’t wait to meet you all and welcome you to the new Phoenix Family. If you need me, I’ll be in the gym. Let’s be great.”
Gottlieb has made a name for himself as a broadcaster, both as a radio host and as a game analyst throughout his career. He currently hosts the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. He also hosts his podcast, All Ball, that covers both college basketball and the NBA.
Perhaps controversially, Gottlieb will continue to host his weekly radio show on Fox Sports according to multiple reports. His show airs weekdays from 3 to 6 p.m. ET.
As a player, Gottlieb was a standout point guard at both Notre Dame and Oklahoma State before going on to a professional career overseas. He has previously been linked to head coaching opportunities in the past, but this will be his first foray into coaching at the collegiate level.
“We are thrilled to welcome Doug as the next leader of Phoenix Basketball,” athletic director Josh Moon said in a release. “He has been working towards this moment his entire life – coaching is in his blood and he will help us continue to RISE!”
Green Bay finished last season with a record of 18-14. The program has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2016.
