Fred Hoiberg recalls Tyler Tanner’s close miss on final shot: ‘Man, that’s going in’

One of the most entertaining games from Saturday night’s second round slate of NCAA Tournament action was the late-night nail-biter between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Vanderbilt Commodores.
The fifth-seeded Commodores and fourth-seeded Huskers went back and forth all game, with Nebraska taking a late 2-point advantage with just seconds left in regulation. Vanderbilt guard Tyler Tanner inbounded the ball as time dwindled down and almost hit what would have been one of the all-time greatest buzzer beaters from beyond half court, but the ball rimmed out to the relief of Nebraska and dismay of the Commodores.
Cornhuskers’ head coach Fred Hoiberg had a front row seat to Tanner’s last-second heave, and said that he thought that it was going in when asked about the play during his post-game press conference.
“That kid is an unbelievable player,” Hoiberg said. “When that thing was up in the air, I was like ‘Oh man, that’s going in.’ It hit every part of the rim and thankfully bounced out, and we’re looking forward to next week and getting the chance to continue to compete.”
Hoiberg and the rest of the Huskers will now get the chance to regroup and catch their breath as they await the winner of Iowa and Florida for what will be the program’s first appearance ever in the Sweet 16.
