If Iowa State is going to advance to the Elite Eight, it appears like it could have to do so without star Joshua Jefferson. The senior forward is currently a game-time decision for the Sweet 16 matchup vs. Tennessee on Friday with an ankle injury and will reportedly get to make the final decision on his status.

Jefferson sustained a low-ankle sprain in Iowa State’s victory vs. Tennessee State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which resulted in him missing the Round of 32 win against Kentucky.

“Still a good amount of pain. If I can just play through hurt, I can play through hurt. Probably won’t be involved in practice today,” Jefferson said. “Try to see how I feel walking around. I’ll see what I can tolerate.”

Jefferson, who earned second-team All-American honors this season, is remaining positive while he rehabs. The dynamic 6-foot-9 standout is averaging 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.

“I think just trying to progress every single day. That’s the only thing I can think about right now. Try to be out there with my team. They’ve worked hard to get out here, so just trying to get out there with them,” Jefferson said. “It’s hard because you always want to be out there. You never want to be on the sideline but just got to deal with it right now.”

Jefferson is hopeful that if Iowa State beats Tennessee that he could be available for the Elite Eight.

“Three more days will definitely help,” Jefferson said. “I think we’re capable of getting to that Sunday game.”
