Joshua Jefferson, Iowa State’s star forward, is “unlikely to play” for the 2-seed Cyclones Sunday afternoon against Kentucky, according to a report from college basketball analyst Jeff Goodman.
Jefferson sprained his left ankle during Iowa State’s first round matchup against Tennessee State. He received his injury update following the game, reporting negative x-rays. He was not initially ruled out for Sunday’s matchup by head coach T.J. Otzelberger.
Otzelberger was asked about Jefferson on Saturday as well, shortly after Goodman’s report. His answer had a similar tone, but it’s worth noting that he refused to rule Jefferson out.
To say this is a blow to Iowa State would be an understatement. Computers adore the Cyclones with Jefferson on the court, but Iowa State’s efficiency takes a major hit with Jefferson off the floor — in fact, it’s the 3rd largest swing in efficiency for a single player with respect to his team’s success in DI college hoops. In other words, Iowa State is a drastically different team with Jefferson on the bench.
He does a little bit of everything for ISU. Jefferson averages 16.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and just under 5 assists per game. He’s especially effective within 10 feet and has a knack for getting to the free throw line – which would cause trouble for a Kentucky team that — at times — struggles to defend effectively without fouling in the paint.
Kentucky and Iowa State are set to face off on CBS at 2:45 p.m. ET on Sunday.
As it stands, Kentucky has a 35% chance to take down No. 2 Iowa State. Here’s a look at the latest odds, via Kalshi:
