Jon Scheyer says multiple Duke staffers were punched in the face during UNC court storming
Duke’s basketball team has had plenty of fun moments playing North Carolina in the Dean Smith Center. The Blue Devils thought Saturday’s matchup was going to be one for their history books when they led by 13 points in the first half. Unfortunately for them, it turned into a chapter of Tar Heel lore when Seth Trimble nailed a game-winning three-pointer with less than a second to play in regulation.
All third-party observers love a good court storming. Those present for the event, though, are sometimes less thrilled about them. That’s the case for Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, who claims that multiple Blue Devil staffers were “punched in the face” in the game’s aftermath.
“It’s hard to talk about the game when I was most concerned for the safety of our players. I don’t wanna make it about that,” Scheyer said. “But… I got staff members that got punched in the face… That’s not what this game is about. That was a scary ending.”
This isn’t the first time Scheyer has chastised an opposing fanbase following a court storm. Back in 2024, he asked when court storming was going to be banned after Kyle Filipowski was injured trying to leave the floor after a loss to Wake Forest. It’s safe to say this incident won’t change his opinion on court storming, but as long as he’s the coach of Duke, they’re going to be something he has to worry about. The Blue Devils return to the court on Tuesday against Pittsburgh (9:00 p.m. ET, ESPN).
