Kansas Jayhawks basketball coach Bill Self was hospitalized Monday, the latest medical setback for the Hall of Fame coach.
Kansas released a statement about the 33-year veteran coach, saying he “felt under the weather earlier today and, out of an abundance of caution, was taken to (Lawrence Memorial Hospital) where he received IV fluids.”
The statement continued by saying that, while the 63-year-old Self was feeling better, he did not accompany the Jayhawks to Boulder, Colo., for their Tuesday night game against Colorado (11 pm ET, ESPN).
Kansas (13-5 overall, 3-2 Big 12) is ranked No. 19 in the country. Under Self, the Jayhawks captured the NCAA Championship in 2008 and 2022 and also made Final Four appearances in 2012 and 2018. Self is currently 830-267 (a .757 winning percentage) at Oral Roberts, Tulsa, Illinois and Kansas.
Self, who is 623-192 at Kansas in 23 seasons, was previously hospitalized on March 8, 2023, when he experienced chest tightness and balance issues, and had to miss the Jayhawks’ postseason run as a result.
More recently, on July 24, 2025, Self had two stents inserted at Lawrence Memorial Hospital as a result of what KU called “concerning symptoms.” He was released two days later. Self has also said in the past that he underwent an aortic valve replacement in the fall of 2022, and coached with a peripherally inserted central catheter, or PICC line, during a recent season.
