Kentucky basketball is set to hire Keegan Brown as its director of roster management for the upcoming college basketball season.

Brown previously worked as the director of player personnel for BYU and head video coordinator for the Wisconsin Herd.

As head of roster management, Brown will presumably have a role that’s similar to general managers in other programs. Head coach Mark Pope has said in the past that he outright doesn’t want a GM, but after a disappointing season that saw Kentucky spend a lot on a roster that didn’t reach the Sweet 16, Brown has stepped into a GM-like role

It was reported that Kentucky spent nearly $22 million on this past year’s roster, and the Wildcats finished 22-14 overall and 10-8 in the SEC. After a half-court shot from Otega Oweh saved their season in the first round, Kentucky went on to lose to Iowa State by 19 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was a disappointing season for the Wildcats. The other worry for Kentucky fans is that the Wildcats have zero high school recruits signed for next season.

In the new era of NIL, GMs in college sports are becoming more and more common. Kentucky is just the latest to add this position to its basketball program.
