Otega Oweh breaks Antonio Reeves record with latest 20-point game
Otega Oweh put up 23 points in 34 minutes in a hugely important 91-77 victory for Kentucky over No. 25 Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon in Lexington.
The senior guard leads the Wildcats in scoring at 17.5 points per game, and he once again led the Wildcats in scoring on Saturday at Rupp Arena, along with Collin Chandler, who also had 23. But as important as Oweh is to Kentucky’s pursuit of an NCAA Tournament berth, he’s proved himself over an extended period of time to be one of UK’s best scorers in the past 30 years.
That’s a long time and that covers a lot of Kentucky greats. Oweh stamped his name onto that elite list on Saturday with his latest gem of a performance, helping the Wildcats get some payback from a loss in Nashville earlier this season. Saturday was all about earning that crucial win and it was also about Oweh, who has now scored at least 20 points in an SEC game for the 20th time in his brilliant career.
So, Oweh not only has produced for his program, he’s done it in the most crucial games — SEC games, against Kentucky’s most bitter rivals. Oweh pulling off the feat for the 20th time in his career is now the most times of any Wildcats player in the past 30 years, breaking Antonio Reeves’ record of 19.
Oweh has done his SEC damage for Kentucky over the past 2 seasons after transferring from Oklahoma. Reeves also torched SEC opponents for the Wildcats over 2 seasons, from 2022-24.
Keith Bogans (17 times from 1999-2003), Jamal Murray (16 times during the 2015-16 season alone) and Joe Crawford (15 times from 2004-08) filled out Kentucky’s elite list behind Oweh and Reeves, according to Radar360.
