Rick Pitino is getting rewarded with a new contract after guiding St. John’s to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999. The 73-year-old Pitino is signing a new contract with St. John’s that will make him the second-highest paid coach in the Big East, according to NJ.com as confirmed by ESPN.

Pitino’s new contract includes an additional year through the 2029-30 season. Only UConn’s Dan Hurley now makes more amongst Big East coaches other than the Basketball Hall of Fame legend.

St. John’s finished with a 30-7 mark after its magical run. The Red Storm repeated as Big East champions with a victory vs. UConn then knocked off Northern Iowa and Kansas to advance to the Sweet 16.

Duke defeated St. John’s in the Sweet 16. It was just the second time in Pitino’s career that he lost in the Sweet 16 out of 14 trips. Prior to the loss to Duke, St. John’s was red-hot with a 21-1 record in its last 22 games.

Prior to this season, Mike Jarvis was the last coach to take St. John’s this deep in the NCAA Tournament. Next season, St.John’s will strive to reach the NCAA Tournament in three straight seasons for the first time since 1989-1993.
