Bruce Pearl’s Auburn Tigers are hungry for a No. 1 ranking.
Auburn, ranked No. 4 in the latest AP Top 25, sits atop the SEC basketball standings as the only 4-0 team in conference play after an 81-77 win over No. 22 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. If Pearl’s Tigers can make it 2-0 this week, they might become the top-ranked team in the land.
No. 1 Baylor lost at home to No. 19 Texas Tech on Tuesday night. On Thursday night, No. 3 UCLA lost to an unranked Oregon team. If Auburn takes care of business Saturday night at Ole Miss, the Tigers would have a strong case for the No. 1 ranking. Currently, Gonzaga (13-2) is ranked No. 2. One of those 2 Gonzaga losses came to Alabama. The Bulldogs face Santa Clara on Saturday.
Auburn at Ole Miss caps the Saturday conference slate of 7 games with the SEC Network late tip of 8:30 p.m. ET. Five SEC teams are ranked, and we get one ranked-vs-ranked conference clash as Tennessee travels to Kentucky. Texas A&M is not currently ranked, but many SEC hoops fans will be watching to see if the Aggies, one of two squads undefeated in conference play (3-0), can keep their winning streak going. Meanwhile, Florida and Georgia are the last 2 SEC teams winless in conference play.
