South Carolina basketball is expected to lose Eli Ellis and Jordan Butler to the transfer portal when the spring window opens on April 7 following the national championship game. The pair have a combined 3 years of experience in Columbia.

First let’s mention Ellis, a high 3-star freshman who appeared in 28 games for the Gamecocks this season. The former OTE MVP in high school averaged 8.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game for South Carolina while playing significant minutes and is likely to transfer down to the mid-major level for next season.

Butler, a Greenville, South Carolina native, also announced his intention to enter the portal on Monday. The junior 7-footer averaged under 3 points per game this season and played a reserve role for a second straight season after transferring in from Missouri. Again, Butler would be best served transferring down a level after 3 years playing reserve for sub .500 SEC teams.

These are the first mentions of transfer portal activity for South Carolina this offseason, but they certainly won’t be the last. The Gamecocks are going to have to hit the portal hard to rebuild following another bottom 5 finish in the SEC.
