Texas A&M is reportedly zeroing in on a mid-major coach to lead Aggies basketball, and it’s a figure who has followed a similar trajectory as Alabama head coach Nate Oats.

According to college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Samford head coach Bucky McMillan is the major frontrunner for the vacancy at Texas A&M. Nothing is official, per Rothstein, but it’s believed the two sides are working through terms of a deal that would make McMillan the coach in College Station.

On the surface, it’s not a move that would generate a lot of buzz for the Aggies. He has gone 99-52 leading Samford in McMillan’s first collegiate coaching job, but has just 1 NCAA Tournament appearance and 2 regular-season Southern Conference titles to his credit.

However, prior to coming to the college ranks, he coached high school basketball in Alabama for 12 years. Nate Oats even offered high praise of McMillan for his Samford bio:

Here’s what Oats had to say about McMillan:

As a former high school coach myself I am excited for both Bucky and Samford University. Bucky is someone who has put his time in and climbed the ladder to earn this opportunity. I have only known him a short time but have seen first-hand that he has the unique ability to connect and motivate his players, the knowledge to evaluate and develop them and the drive and passion it takes to coach at a high level. I’m confident he will do some great things at Samford.

We’ll see what becomes of the move, but it is an unconventional one if it is the final hiring by A&M.
