Texas basketball lands transfer commitment from high-scoring Big 12 guard
Texas went all the way from the First Four to the Sweet 16 this past season under Sean Miller, and on Saturday afternoon Miller and the Longhorns got some reinforcement for another deep NCAA Tournament run next season.
Colorado transfer prize Isaiah Johnson, considered one of the best available guards in the transfer portal, announced on Instagram that he’s heading from the Big 12 to the SEC next season, and that he’ll be playing his basketball in Austin.
The 6-foot-1 Los Angeles native made quite the impression in Boulder during his freshman season, averaging 16.9 points, 3.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds while shooting 48.6%, which is very impressive for a point guard.
Johnson earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors for his efforts, and now he’ll be bringing that dynamic scoring ability to Austin as Miller tries to reload his roster for another run like he just engineered in his first season as Texas head coach. The Longhorns will be getting Colorado’s leading scorer from last season, and Johnson also led the Buffaloes in steals with 1.0 per contest. Johnson was second on Colorado with those 3 assists per game.
After announcing his decision to enter the portal on March 27, Johnson finally made clear where he’ll be playing his sophomore season a few weeks later. With the portal not officially opening for business until April 7, the day after the national championship game, Johnson had to wait a little while before making his plans known for the 2026-27 season.
Now, Johnson’s destination for next season is known, and it’ll be at a program that Miller has on the rise, with this past March being a prime example.
With Johnson in the mix, Texas will have a lot more firepower for a potential run in next season’s NCAA Tournament. Here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about the top teams it thinks have the best shot to cut down the nets next April:
