As of 3:45 p.m. Monday afternoon, Hubert Davis is still the head coach for the North Carolina Tar Heels. It felt relevant to mention a time, because that status has the potential to change any given moment.
The Tar Heels were bounced in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season last week, falling to 11-seed VCU. That marks the third season across the last 4 with no NCAA Tournament wins for Davis, which is far from the standard at North Carolina. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on Saturday that Davis’s future at North Carolina is “squarely in flux.”
And as of Monday afternoon, a few SEC coaches are leading the way in the latest odds to become North Carolina’s head coach, should UNC decide part ways. Notably, Florida’s Todd Golden and Vanderbilt’s Mark Byington round out 2 of the top 3 odds, with Byington listed as the favorite. Here’s a full look at the top 10:
Golden and Byington’s teams have already been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament. Vanderbilt fell to Nebraska after Tyler Tanner’s half-court heave rimmed out while Florida fell in stunning fashion at the hands of 9-seed Iowa.
Other names with intriguing odds include Billy Donovan, Tommy Lloyd and TJ Otzelberger.
