Florida head coach Todd Golden revealed the official’s explanation for their decision in the Alex Condon and Alvaro Folguerias scrap during his postgame presser.
The Hawkeyes took down the defending champions in the Round of 32 on Sunday night, 73-72. The game was a highly contested contest, and at one point in the first half, tempers flared after Florida center Alex Condon and Iowa forward Albaro Folgueiras fought for a loose ball.
Folgueiras looked like he might have thrown a punch, but after review, both players were assessed a technical foul. Here’s what Golden said the referees explained to him after their ruling:
“Yeah, I was told that they threw a punch, but it didn’t connect so it didn’t go any higher than a flagrant 1,” Golden said. “I’m not sure what this means. I still don’t understand why Condo got a technical. They were both fighting for the ball equally, Condo was just stronger and pulled him down to the floor. But they were both grabbing the ball. It was a confusing play and I’m not really sure how that landed on that result.”
Here’s a look at the play Golden was referencing:
What made this decision even more frustrating for Golden and Florida fans is that Folgueiras would go on to hit the 3-pointer to put the Hawkeyes up 73-72 with less than 5 seconds left in the game.
