How Cleveland paid $17 million to draft Nick Chubb in the second round of 2018 NFL Draft

Any Georgia fan will tell you Nick Chubb is a humble guy. That makes the fact that he’s the most expensive second-round pick in NFL history somewhat ironic.

With the 35th overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Cleveland picked the former standout Georgia running back during Friday night’s second round. How does that make Chubb the most expensive second rounder ever? That’s the price the club paid to acquire that pick.

Back in March of 2017, Cleveland accepted a trade with Houston which sent quarterback Brock Osweiler and a 2nd round pick to the Browns. Aside from swapping compensatory picks, Cleveland did not offer up anything in return for the QB or the pick. Why would the Texans make such a move? Simply to wash its hands of Osweiler’s massive salary.

The Browns kept Osweiler on the roster for a few months, and paid him his guaranteed $17 million, only to cut him before the 2017 regular season. The pick that was acquired with the former Texan QB was just used to select Chubb.

While he came with a heavy price tag, if he can match the productivity and leadership displayed in Athens over the previous four seasons, that price Cleveland will have paid will seem like nothing.
