3 takeaways from Ole Miss’ win over Georgia Tech as Jaxson Dart enjoys signature game

Ole Miss needed a game to avoid any kind of let down, as the Rebels had ample reason to be distracted.

After all, Ole Miss is fresh off of a 37-20 victory over Tulane in a Top 25 matchup where the Rebels finished on a 30-3 scoring run. Next week is a visit to Alabama for the SEC opener.

But on Saturday night in Oxford, Jaxson Dart showed off his experience and wheels with an impressive showing to make up for a limited night from Quinshon Judkins. Ole Miss enjoyed a 48-23 victory.

The Rebels were aware of Tech’s potential after the Yellow Jackets last season beat 2 ranked teams after Brent Key took over as interim coach. Now, he has the job full-time.

Here are our takeaways:

Big plays

Ole Miss found the big play to be especially beneficial as the Rebels had 7 plays of at least 15 yards, and they were highlighted by a late touchdown from Dart to Jordan Watkins, which went for 68 yards and a touchdown. Then Judkins tacked on a late touchdown after 2 other players went for 34 yards on a late drive. Dart had 10 completions of 20+ yards in the air. By midway through the 3rd quarter, the Rebels averaged 7.8 yards per play, 8.7 yards per rush and 280 yards of offense.

Dart wows with big rushing game

Some already called this Dart’s best game as he had 14 carries for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns with more than 3 minutes remaining. Dart already has the ability to give defenses headaches with his running ability, but when he adds that to the big-play threat, it makes it nearly impossible for defenses to contain Dart.

Defense gets plenty of pressure

The defense bottled up the Yellow Jackets for just 12-for-23 on 3rd and 4th down combined with less than 2 minutes remaining. One key stretch came as Ole Miss held a 10-3 lead at halftime, and Ole Miss held Tech to 11 yards on 10 plays in Tech’s first 2 offensive possessions of the second half.
