5 Georgia players Vanderbilt fans need to know

Here are five Bulldogs that Vanderbilt fans should get to know before kickoff in Athens on Saturday:

  1. Todd Gurley: It’s difficult to imagine a scenario where Gurley plays all four quarters this weekend, but it could happen if the Commodores wrap up and hit college football’s best back at the line of scrimmage. Much of Gurley’s rushing total has come after contact this season. He’s a red zone monster and Vanderbilt’s given up the second-most touchdowns on the ground (9) in the SEC this season.
  2. Amarlo Herrera: Georgia’s leader in tackles and sacks this season has been the Bulldogs’ top player on his side of the ball, stepping up as a leader for Jeremy Pruitt. Known much of his career as a run-stopper, Herrera’s improved on the blitz and is arguably the Bulldogs’ most complete linebacker.
  3. Nick Chubb: With running backs Sony Michel and Keith Marshall on the mend, Chubb’s second in charge in the Georgia backfield. He’s averaging 6.3 yards per carry as a true freshman and scored his second career touchdown on a 20-yard reception in last week’s win over Tennessee.
  4. Leonard Floyd: One of the SEC’s most athletic players, Floyd’s a matchup nightmare for a struggling Vanderbilt offensive front. He’s been caught out of position at times and was blanketed during the Bulldogs’ loss at South Carolina, but the chance at a breakout game as a sophomore comes Saturday against Commodores.
  5. Justin Scott-Wesley: One of two wide receivers expected to return from injury this weekend, Scott-Wesley adds another dimension to the Georgia offense in need of playmakers on the outside. Hutson Mason’s been up and down in the early going and a rangy target like Scott-Wesley — or Malcolm Mitchell — would make his job that much easier.
