Arkansas opted to fire head coach Sam Pittman on Saturday, creating a vacancy that will need to be filled in the coming months.

The Arkansas job will certainly garner interest from certain head coaches and top assistants from around the country. One leading candidate, according to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, is SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee.

Per Feldman’s report, Lashlee has the “support” of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is a former Razorback himself and an Arkansas booster. The report goes as far as to say Jones is “squarely behind” the effort to get Lashlee in charge of Arkansas football.

Lashlee is an Arkansas alum. He played quarterback for the Razorbacks more than 20 years ago and has since launched a successful coaching career that culminated in bringing SMU to the College Football Playoff last season.

In addition to playing for the Razorbacks, Lashlee is from Springdale, Arkansas, which is near Fayetteville. Taking the Arkansas job would represent a homecoming of sorts for the former Arkansas quarterback on multiple levels.

Entering this season, Arkansas had reached bowl eligibility in 3 of the previous 4 seasons.
