Admiral Schofield reflects on his Tennessee career: ‘I think we built something special’

Believe it or not, the Admiral Schofield era is over at Tennessee.

Schofield turned down an opportunity to leave school early for the NBA this time last year and returned to have his best season yet in what many will view as the best overall season in Tennessee basketball program history. Following Tennessee’s heartbreaking overtime loss to Purdue on Thursday night in the Sweet 16, Schofield met with the media to reflect on his career on Rocky Top and just how far the program has come since his arrival four years ago.

“I think we built something special. I think the biggest thing that you have to appreciate is the culture we built at Tennessee. A winning culture, I really appreciate and I’m just sad that I have to go,” Schofield said.

Ending the season in the Sweet 16 certainly wasn’t the goal for this team but Schofield can at least take pleasure in the fact he played an integral role in building the Tennessee program from a complete afterthought in the league to an annual contender for the league title.

“We really came from the bottom,” Schofield continued. “To make it to the Sweet 16 is a dream come true and we came up a little short but at the end of the day, I’ll remember when we were losing 19 and 16 games and no one believing in us. I remember when we could barely get 17,000 in the arena and this year we averaged around 21,000. God has been amazing this year, He’s been amazing all four of my years here. It’s a blessing to call myself a Tennessee Volunteer.”
