After losing QB competition, North Carolina redshirt freshman reportedly enters name into NCAA transfer portal

North Carolina had a three-man battle for the starting quarterback job for 2019 and now one of those QBs is reportedly entering his name into the NCAA’s transfer portal.
Ross Martin of Inside Carolina reports that Cade Fortin has entered his name into the transfer portal. Fortin, a redshirt freshman, competed with true freshman Sam Howell and fellow redshirt freshman Jace Ruder to be the Tar Heels’ starting signal-caller. Inside Carolina notes that UNC coach Mack Brown has not officially announced a starting quarterback for Week 1. Brown recently revealed that Howell would start working with the first-team offense, which was widely reported as Howell winning the job (as starters make up the first-team unit). Fortin’s decision to enter the portal further indicates the starting job is indeed decided.
Fortin was a 3-star pro-style prospect in the class of 2018. He committed to Texas A&M on Aug. 15, 2016, but backed off that pledge on Dec. 4, 2017, committing to North Carolina three days later (Dec. 7, 2017). The Suwanee, Georgia native had 16 scholarship offers, including Kentucky, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt.
North Carolina faces South Carolina on Aug. 31 in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium.
