The North Carolina defense stopped tackling in the first quarter. The Carolina fans stopped caring in the second quarter. As the Tar Heels (2-2) fell down 35-3 against Clemson with just over 2 minutes to play in the first half, the crowd inside Kenan Stadium started to thin out.

“The Carolina defense (is) leaking oil right now, and the stadium (is) leaking fans,” ESPN’s Mark Jones said on the broadcast.

When Clemson ended the first quarter with a 28-3 lead, everyone on social media made the same joke about Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and a 28-3 margin.

But, by the time Clemson scored again — with relative ease… again — the jokes were mostly just about Belichick.

The first-year North Carolina head coach has been outscored 117-26 in his first 10 quarters against power-conference competition. The Heels beat Charlotte on the road and smacked Richmond at home, but the gap between them and their peers has looked more like a chasm to start Belichick’s tenure.

On Saturday, the Tigers sparked their sputtering offense with a trick play on the first play of the game. They went on to produce 253 yards of offense at 15.8 yards per play in the first 15 minutes of the game. At the half, Clemson had 367 yards at 10.2 per play.

Carolina, meanwhile, gained only 78 yards of offense at 2.8 yards per play. After going 58 yards and kicking a field goal on their first drive of the game, the Tar Heels went 3-and-out on each of their next 4 drives and lost 5 yards.

So, at the half, Belichick was an easy target on social media.
