The College Football Playoff race and both SEC division races were impacted heavily by a wild Week 7. Four top 10 teams were upset. Four more teams ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 also lost. LSU’s 36-16 win over Georgia was the headlining event of the weekend.
Good luck to the AP voters who have sort that out. ESPN’s Football Power Index rankings, on the other hand, are metric-based. The FPI, based on 10,000 simulations, is defined as “a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season.”
With the Week 7 dust settled, the updated FPI as of Sunday morning has seven SEC teams ranked in the top 25:

- No. 1 – Alabama
- No. 4 – Georgia
- No. 10 – LSU
- No. 11 – Florida
- No. 12 – Mississippi State
- No. 14 – Texas A&M
- No. 21 – Auburn
For those keeping track, Georgia dropped only one spot. LSU moved up six spots after the big win. Missouri was previously No. 25 and is now down to No. 30. Still missing the cut is Kentucky at No. 26.
You would be hard pressed to find anyone who considers Auburn in the 21 best teams in the country, but the FPI often differs from the “eye test.”
The full rankings of all 130 FBS teams, including the rest of the SEC, can be found on ESPN’s website.
